Fashion Photography Film: Stop-Motion For Beautiful Soul

Fashion Photography Film: Stop-Motion For Beautiful Soul

It’s been a busy few weeks…

Nicola Woods of new label beautiful Soul www.beautiful-soul.com has been badgering me for months to direct a fashion film to showcase the spring summer collection as well as shooting the fashion photography stills for her Look Book. Nicola was really interested in the work of an illustrator she had been working with called Zarina Liew www.cobaltcafe.co.uk

When she showed me the illustrations I had the idea of make a film using the drawings as the setting using green screen and stop-motion to create the worlds that influenced the collections and developed this concept to give the film a lovely, fresh upbeat feel which I felt would really work with her collection.

Rivkie Baum came on board as stylist with ideas of glass boxes and yellow brick roads, and the team was complete. The first day we shot a movie of the models against a green screen – and did the stills for Beautiful Soul’s Look Book at the same time.  The next step was to create stop motion animations of Zarina actually drawing that we could fit in with the live action footage.

So there was the prep, organisation and set up, then two days shooting. After that the real work began – I said I’d been busy! It took me several weeks of long days and late nights to comp the two together using After Effects and Final Cut Pro.

Its been a really rich learning experience and I’ll post up some of those lessons over the weeks to come. Here’s the video:
